What Is a Performance Max Campaign?
Performance Max (PMax) is Google's AI-powered campaign type that runs across all of Google's channels — including Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps — using a single campaign setup.
It's not a beginner tool. Performance Max works best when:
You have 3–6 months of existing Search campaign data
Conversion tracking is properly set up
You've achieved at least 90 conversions in the last 3 months (~30/month)
You've built remarketing and customer lists to guide audience targeting
The Setup
01
Before launching a Performance Max campaign, run a Search campaign to gather valuable data. This includes:
You'll use this data to build your audience signals and exclude poor-performing terms.
02
In Google Ads:
03
Choose your primary conversion action — for most service businesses, this will be a form fill or phone call.
Tip: Use "Conversions" rather than "Conversion Value" unless you've assigned values to your leads.
04
Tick "Bid for new customers only" if you want this campaign to target prospects, not repeat users. This helps avoid overlap with your Search campaigns.
Important: You'll need to upload a customer list or have remarketing audiences built already — otherwise, this option won't work properly.
05
Enable:
Then, click "Advanced Settings" and exclude any irrelevant pages (e.g. blog posts, FAQs, or product categories you don't want to promote).
06
To avoid wasting budget on branded traffic you'd get anyway, exclude:
Do this using the Campaign-Level Brand Exclusions tool.
07
Don't skip this — Google uses it as a starting point to optimise delivery.
08
Each Asset Group is like an Ad Group — focus each one on a specific service or product category. Include:
Tip: Create multiple asset groups to match different service offerings or target audiences.
09
Start with at least £10/day and monitor closely. Don't enable tCPA or tROAS until you've got enough data — give the campaign a few weeks to learn. Fix any setup errors (e.g. audience list not applied), and once everything looks good, hit Publish.
Final Tips
Performance Max rewards the advertisers who feed it well —
good data in, good leads out.
